Europe Latest

The UK’s Coldest air since March arrives in dramatic fashion with Heavy Rains and Strong Winds

Sharp thermal contrast across the UK as of 4pm: With the passing of the cold front, Belfast was 39 degrees (4C) & Glasgow 43 degrees (6C) while to the south of the front, Hull read 59 degrees (15C) and London a balmy 63 degrees (17C).

Along a frontal boundary seperating two distinctly different air masses has been a deep moisture feed off the Atlantic which has produced day-long heavy rains over Central Scotland. This boundary with embedded energy flowing west to east along this front will sweep south through England and Wales tonight bringing intense rains, potentially damaging winds and even some thunder and hail.

Behind the boundary is much fresher air as my temperature dropped from a mild 51F (11C) at 1.30am this morning to 39F (4C) by 4pm this afternoon. A pronounced NW flow of air Tuesday through Wednesday will transport even colder air south into the UK from Iceland and this will set the stage for a widespread frost and freeze Wednesday night as high pressure produces clearer skies and lighter winds.
