AFTER A COLD POOL-BUILDING POSITIVE NORTH ATLANTIC OSCILLATION, THE WEEKEND SEES A FLIP TO NEGATIVE PRESENTING THE FIRST COLD OF THE SEASON TO BOTH CANADA-US AND THE UK

The next several days will see an intense vortex of cold leave Greenland and head south as high pressure builds over the North Atlantic over the weekend. Next week sees both Canada and the US turn cold with significant lake effect snows while the first freezing weather impacts the UK!

Canada looks to turn very wintry early next week as cold which has been intensifying over northern Greenland over recent weeks gets released south thanks to the flip to a NEGATIVE North Atlantic Oscillation. The building ridge over the North Atlantic up into Greenland will force the vortex of cold from Greenland into Nunavut and Northwest Territories and through next week as an upper low develops over Hudson Bay, this will help transport this frigid air south into Manitoba and east through Ontario.

A storm sliding over southern Canada will present the moisture which meets this first frigid push of air of the season to produce a sizable snowstorm over Ontario and Quebec as well as deepen the trough south through the US. This opens the door to the first major lake-effect snowstorm for the downwind areas of the Great Lakes as bitter northwest winds blow out of Ontario. The Appalachains will also likely get a decent snowstorm by late next week. On the heels of this system and as the cold flows southeastwards, we’re likely to see a very cold late week and weekend NEXT week across Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec south through the Great Lakes and interior Northeast.
