Great Britain Basks in Record-Breaking Heat
All eyes on the thermometer on Saturday as the UK all-time record October high of 85 degrees (29.4C) may be broken with some places expecting to reach an incredible 86 degrees (30C).
BREAKING NEWS: The temperature @ Finningley AFB in South Yorkshire reached 86 degrees (30C) this afternoon, hottest so late in the year for UK?.
Record Warm Days and Nights Make for Exceptional Close to September 2011
On Wednesday night, at least two locales reported their warmest September nights on record. The well known UK icebox of Altnaharra, Sutherland in Scotland’s far north and well away from any urban heat island saw their low only fall to 17.4C (63 degrees F) smashing their old record of 15.8C set in 2006. Belfast, N. Ireland saw their low dip to only 16.6C (62 degrees F) breaking their old record of 16.2C in 2004.
Today and yesterday became the hottest September 29th and 30th in UK history. Yesterday’s 28.8C high reached at Kew Gardens in London became the hottest for the date on record while today’s 29.2C at Cambridge broke a 1908 record for September 30th. The old record was 28.7C reached at Maidenhead, Kent.
All eyes on the thermometer on Saturday!
Over the next 24-hours, the atmospheric conditions will remain much the same from about Yorkshire southwards while Atlantic fronts are sweeping across Scotland, pulling down temperatures as cloud and rain rolls in from the North Atlantic.
However, pressures are every bit as strong across England and Wales as today and with the strong subsidence of air overhead, strong sunshine beaming down and a substantial south, southeasterly air flow, there is no reason why the temperature from the interior South to north-central England can’t strike between 25-30C tomorrow.
Today’s high at Cambridge of 29.2C, the multiple readings of 28C throughout the east Midlands and 28C to an unofficial 30C at Finningley, South Yorkshire means that tomorrow has a good chance at experiencing upper 20s C to around 30C given the similar atmospheric conditions. The all-time October record of 29.4C may fall by not one but perhaps a few sites tomorrow.
