TODAY’S WEATHER ACROSS UK & EUROPE By Mark Vogan

Trough and cold pocket spinning over UK is helping produce unusually chilly nights, showers and t-storms continue across European mainland. System to impact southwest to northeast England late weekend into next week

Models are showing that a new storm system is brewing out off the French west coast and moving northeast towards the UK. An unusual cocktail of wind, rain and cool temps which will arrive late Sunday or Monday to Devon and Cornwall will spread northeastwards up across England and Wales. This, rather than the recent isolated and heavy showers will be widespread, covering a large area and rains will be persistent and likely heavy. A brisk wind looks set to strengthen also… More on this coming up…

The rest of Europe sees a large band of heavy rain and unsettled conditions stretch down from central Scandinavia down through the Baltics and Balkans and into Greece. The further south one goes, the more isolated they become as pressures are stronger and temps higher. There is a lot of heat the further east you go across the continent with highs from Greece to southern Finland, into Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania into Russia ranging from the 24 to 32C range with low 30s C over southern Italy, Greece and coastal west, south Turkey. The Turkish Interior remains showery and somewhat unsettled.

Spain, Portugal remain showery but more isolated in nature. At least it’s warm!

Showers and storms continue to be isolated across Iberia with low 30s C over southern Portugal and southwest Spain, mid to upper 20s C elsewhere. The furthern north you go, up through France, the cooler and more unsettled conditions become where London and even into Paris is onl;y enjoying 18C rather than the recent low 20s C all thanks to a large area of low pressure and cold upper atmsosphere.

TODAY’S WEATHER ACROSS AMERICA By Mark Vogan

Boundary lies from eastern Colorado to Philadelphia, brings rainy, thundry conditions across many areas as it splits the hot air to the south from the mild air to the north

Through tonight, thanks to some upper level energy sliding along a boundary which divides the hot, humid air across the South from the milder air to the north will fire some strong to severe thunderstorms from the Central Plains from North Texas up through Oklahoma and Kansas eastbound through the Mid-Mississippi, Tennessee and Ohio Valleys tonight. Rains will spread in a showery, thundery fashion across the Northeast through Saturday while temps trim back to normal with 60s across New England, 70s over southern New York and 80s from Philadelphia to Washington DC.

Northeast returns to normality this weekend

Exceptional Heat blasts Mid-Atlantic & Northeast yesterday following highway-buckling 100s in Minneapolis 2 days before!

It would appear that the magnitude of heat we’ve seen spread firstly up over the Plains in the past days and spread east to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast was ‘pumped’ by an abnormally strong Pacific Jet Stream which formed a strong unseasonable storm system off and across California and the West. This storm was more suitable for late winter rather than early summer which fed energy east into a large ‘summer-like high pressure system’ which ballooned east of the Rockies. This forced Mexico-like heat all the way north to Minneapolis, producing 103 degree heat and the hottest levels in the city since July 1988 there and the hottest levels in Chicago since August 2006…

Extreme and exceptional heat was first seen in New Orleans and Houston before it headed to Minneapolis…

Prior to the Northern Plains scorcher, we firstly saw a 100 degree record high in New Orleans, La, then two straight days of 105 degrees in Houston, Tx which was not only the hottest temperature for ther city since 2000 but it was the highest June temperature on record as well as the earliest such high on record. Amazingly, this was achieved on two consecutive days. The elements for such intense heat in Houston was in a large part down to the exceptional drought and the abnormalities of the upper pattern over the Pacific and West Coast. These made for the poerfect cauldron for extreme heat. Thanks to the unusually cold pool of air flooding the western trough and deepening it, this increased the Pacific jet, the piling up of air within the trough base and thus bycicle pumped the ridge explosively creating an historic heat day for the city of Minneapolis.

Had this system not been there and the upper atmosphere not as cold over California and had the drought not been there or as intense across Texas, this wouldn’t have occured. It was a perfect combination and merging of atmospheric events which produced such extreme heat.

This heat and high then pushed to the East Coast bringing record shattering heat to the big cities.
