Record low broken in the nations “Icebox”

Imagine taking Chicago’s frigid morning low of 4 degrees below zero and subtracting another 40 degrees. That’s exactly how brutally cold it was earlier today in Northern Minnesota. So cold in fact that International Falls, Minnesota, often called the “Icebox of the Nation”, established a record low of 46 degrees below zero. That mind and body numbing temperature is also the fifth coldest temperature ever recorded in International Falls weather history.

-46F is 78 degrees below freezing

-46F is 123 degrees colder than the current temperature in Ventura, California (77F at 2PM CST)

-46F is 136 degrees colder than 90F

WEATHER TALK
By Mark Vogan

Despite Minneapolis hitting 16 below (F) this morning, the city has seen only a quarter the “average” amount of subzero lows for a winter and time is moving along!

Whilst Midwesterners shivered in what was a brutally cold morning and will remain so through today with a high likely no better than 4 or 5 degrees after the morning low hitting -16 at Minneapolis-St Paul Airport, just south of downtown Minneapolis. Of course, the biggest headline this morning was the stunning -46 degree low up in frozen, International Falls which was a record for the date and coldest there since 1968!

However how has winter been for you in Minneapolis? Has it been a “real winter” in your eyes?. Temperatures in terms of “extreme” haven’t been all that bad for Minneapolis. Yes, I would say it’s been a long cold winter.. (see stats below) with persistent low temperatures by day and night and with heavy snowcover and the fact that it’s in the middle of a continent doesn’t really help. If you don’t like cold and snow, this is certainly not a place id advise living in or even visiting during midwinter, I say that because many here are moaning through what has been a real winter here in Scotland and I keep telling myself at how our numbers would be so welcome in Minneapolis right now. HOWEVER, I’ve visited and indeed enjoyed the city that much that I returned for a second time and yes in February (however I LOVE winter). I love Minneapolis and the wonderful state of Minnesota, so there you go, I’m not going down the road of critising simply because winter’s are tough here.

This morning marked day no. 10 of sub zero lows… The average for a winter is 30, so when you look at it that way, does that make this winter any less of a Minnesota winter? Id say, it’s not all about the numbers. You could have 30 days sub-zero and the rest well above normal or you could have a winter which barely ever saw freezing and persistent highs below 20 and lows between 0 and 10 degrees, which I believe is what this winter has seemed like, looking at it from this side of the pond.

These stats, may help you descide whether your winter in Minneapolis has been tough this year.

STATS STATED BY WCCO-TV’s MIKE AUGUSTIANAK THIS MORNING

In 51 days, there have only been 13 snow-free days! (7 and a half weeks worth)

So far, 54.2″ of snow, average for year 55.9″. There is still another 10 days of January and all of February for severe cold, snow and winter and thus far, id say there Minneapolis has seen far worse, but indeed this has been a long, cold winter with lots of snow!

TODAY’S CONDITIONS (LOCALLY)
A second consecutive night of perfect conditions for maximum radiational cooling, allowed a severe frost to form and the second night of the month to creep below 20 degrees. After sunrise fog, like yesterday formed over the area and this put a lid on daytime warming. Today brought yet another day which failed to top 32 degrees and yes, it’s now day 21 which has been sub-freezing. Tonight’s return to 20s marks night 16 of the month for nights below freezing and if we drop back below 32 tomorrow night, this would tie last January’s number of nights below freezing! Yes, the winter continues to deliver, real winter conditions for a 2nd straight year, like last winter, we’ll be glad to see spring arrive this year again!

Thanks for reading.
