WEATHER TALK

WET, WINDY AND MILD ATLANTIC WEATHER BACK IN BUSINESS ACROSS UK!

With now a strong southwesterly wind rattling in off the Atlantic and across Britain, both waves of rain, blustery winds and most importantly MILD air which is rising southern England temperatures to 13C in several places this afternoon and even 10 or 11, perhaps the odd 12C along the southwest or western coast of Scotland, this is a vast change compared to what we’ve received. I think you’d agree that the air actually feels warm, when comparing the air air we’ve come to get use to over recent times. There’s a vast difference between 37 and 48 degrees (2.5C and 9C) and even tonight as of 9pm, my thermometer was reading 47 degrees (8C), yes at 9PM!

Of course, these kinds of temperatures during the month of January always comes at the cost of Atlantic low pressure. It’s actually the push of air in from a southwesterly direction off the Atlantic which helps draw abnormally mild air across our land and thus indeed we have rain, heavy, murky cloud and at times, blusterly winds. Those winds are set to intensify across the UK come Saturday as a strong Atlantic low crosses to our north and as isobars pack, so those winds strengthen with perhaps wind speeds bordering gale-force, even across inland areas on Saturday. We haven’t seen this type of weather in quite a while eh?

With that stronger push of sub-tropical Atlantic air, we will enjoy temperatures surging into the 11-13C range perhaps even up into Dumfries, Glasgow and Perth and roughly the same types of values for much of the rest of Britain.

VAGARIES OF THE WEATHER
INDIA & SUB-CONTINENTAL ASIA WEATHER
BY RAJESH KAPADIA

Fluctuation at its Extreme !

Day Temperatures in the Northern Sub Continent shoot up to above Normal levels from very much below Normal !

Just a few days ago Vagaries was raving about the days being 12-14c below the normal range in Northern regions of the Sub Continent. Lows, like 7c and 8c, some records of an all time coldest Day, were mentioned here, and Delhi was shivering at 10c, in our last write up.

Now, suddenly, the days have shot up to26.4c in the capital (Palam) and 4c above the normal range in most of the region.

It is one thing of things going back to normalcy, to comfortable levels. But this is a straight jump to above normal levels. This is what vagaries is all about !!

Thursday’s map of the day temperatures and the anomaly shows it all.

I would call it the Pre W.D. Heat.

W.D. will start precipitating rain/snow in the Kashmir region, H.P. hills and West utterakhand from Friday. Plains of Punjab, Haryana, Utterakhand and Delhi will start getting the rains from Friday, maybe by evening. That will keep this sudden spurt in the day temperatures short lived. Fog expected to reappear in Delhi after 16th. Jan.

By Saturday, I expect the W.D. effect to spread to Nepal. The depth of the W.D. will make it penetrate upto Central regions of Nepal. Katmandu, cloudy from Friday, with some rain on Saturday.

The abrupt spurt in the days is not restricted to the North. The effect is felt far down thru Mah. into the Southern States.

The highest day temperature in India today, 13th. Jan. was at Mangalore. Goa and Ratnagiri, at 34c, followed by Solapur reaching 33c. Cochin and Hyderabad topped 32c.

Incidentally, Pattaya, , alongwith the Indian Cities, also at 34c was the highest in Asia today
The hottest day in Pakistan on Thursday was 29c at Lasbella and Turbat.

Mentioning of Maximum temperatures on the Vagaries is meant only to indicate a very sharp “overnite” jump in the days, and should normalize by Friday/Saturday.

**CHILL**

ICE TODAY IN THE MORNING AT CHIPINQUE PARK IN THE SIERRA MADRE RANGE, LOCATED AROUND 4000 FEET ABOVE SEA LEVEL. TEMPERATURES WERE AROUND 29°F

COLD AND DAMP DAYS AHEAD

TODAY’S HIGHLIGHTS

Current conditions at the Metropolitan area of Monterrey are really chilly and damp with realfeel temps below freezing and temperatures fluctuating between 35-38°F. At the previous post you can observe some freezing rain and icing at the Sierra de Santiago which is located 15 miles southwest of the city and around 6,000 feet above sea level. Steady drizzle all day long has fallen and continues to fall. Already some sleet and snow reports have appeared at the mountainous range at Central Coahuila (around 300 km due northeast of the city).

WHAT TO EXPECT?

NAM keeps calling for some freezing rain and even some snow for suburban areas around the city and the mountains. Expect near or sub-freezing temps at late evening

Tommorrow stays again chilly and damp with temps oscillating between low 30s and low 40s.  Throughout the region expect freezes and hard freezes for Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and the Tamaulipas Valley near Lower Rio Grande Valley. Friday remains damp too, however a slight recovery at temps is expected with lows in the 40s and highs struggling to reach high 50s across the region. Rain conditions might continue throughout the weekend but expected a noticeable recovery by sunday once the moisture from the gulf and a developing storm in the northern Gulf of Mexico passes by.
