TODAY’S WEATHER ACROSS SCOTLAND & UK
By Mark Vogan
FINALLY AREAS OF SCOTLAND FEEL THE 50’s…. +10C TEMPERATURES, INLAND AREAS SHOULD APPROACH THIS TOMORROW!
Despite yet another snowy start with a thin covering here at my house between 12.30-4am which meleted as this morning’s temps rose, just like back in the “good old days” when snow never lasted beyond a few hours most of the time, remember those days??, my thermometer rose to a “balmy” 41 degrees (5.9C). Yes hardy what you’d call warm by any stretch but we are getting there and whilst I watched clouds fly overhead at low levels out of the SW, this told me that milder air continues to fight inland Scotland’s residual chilly air but the cold is now finally loosing it’s fight and tomorrow “should” warm to the greatest levels since mid-November and we should see a further dissappearance of the ice and remaining snow patches. It seems that after another night which pushes the freezing mark, we are set for a prolonged series of well-above freezing nights of between 40-46 degrees (4-6C) and days which push 50 degrees (10C).

WHAT WOULD YOU RATHER MILD OVERNIGHT TEMPERATURES BUT VERY WET, GLOOMY SKIES OR COLD, CLEAR AND FROSTY? SOUTHERN ENGLAND WILL BE VERY WET THROUGH TONIGHT INTO TOMORROW BUT TEMPS NICE AND MILD WITH 50-51 DEGREES (10-11C) OVERNIGHT AND 55 DEGREES (13C) TOMORROW!
I bet many across the southern half of Britain from Plymouth, Cardiff across to Grester London are cursing the breezy wet conditions, however temperatures are remaining nice and mild, perhaps you could call it warm when there’s no wind and your comparing it to the weather back around Christmas time. Unfortunately, mild weather during the heart of winter here tends to be brought to us via Atlantic weather systems and this comes at a wet, windy price… Then again, we should’nt moan, at least it’s warmer!

This morning’s 2.40am snow drive!

FORTH-CLYDE CANAL- PERMANENTLY FROZEN FROM THE END OF NOVEMBER 2010 UNTIL JANUARY 12TH, 2011, THE COUNT CONTINUES!

The above photos I took around lunchtime today of the Forth-Clyde canal beside the Leisure Drome in Bishopbriggs. Whether your in Kirkintilloch, Bishopbriggs, Lambhill or wherever, you’ll have noticed the canal frozen and in fact frozen permanently for perhaps as far back as November 25th, in case you’ve lost track, it’s now already 12 days into the New Year and still, it’s frozen! Remarkable indeed… This as well as other bodies of water began freezing on it’s surface around the time the first snows arrived across Scotland as days previously were cold and becoming colder. Though, it wasn’t until about a week or even 10 days into the cold period, where of course we saw the Central Belt endure snow after snow and snow event, id the cold air really start to intensify. Many thought, including myself at that particular time that the snows were worse than last year, but not the cold.. Even though this, narrow and still body of water will freeze easier than larger areas of water as well as waters that move, whether it be breeze-action or tidal, the fact that this water has been frozen for close to a month and a half is pretty incredible.. The persistency and intensity of the cold shows in these two photos I’ve taken above. I thought as temperatures warm in coming days it’s likely this canal will see the end to ice on it’s surface FOR NOW anyway.

ANOTHER COLD START FOR WESTERN, CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN US, VERY SNOWY FOR NORTHEAST!
