BREAKING NEWS: A FRESH, NEW COVERING OF SNOW IS BLANKETING THE GREATER GLASGOW AREA EASTWARDS THROUGH THE CENTRAL BELT, HOW MUCH WILL ACCUMMULATE? 1-2 INCHES PERHAPS?.. AFTER THIS BAND PETER’S OUT AS IT TRECKS NORTHWARDS, A NEW BAND WILL PUSH IN OFF THE ATLANTIC THROUGH TOMORROW!

A SIGN OF THINGS TO COME FOR SCOTLAND AS CORNWALL HIT BY FLOODING. 3AM TEMPS UP TO 11.1C (52 DEGREES) WITH SUSTAINED WINDS OUT OF SW AT 31, GUSTING TO 38!

This was the scene this morning over sections of Cornwall were overnight temps reached 52 degrees (11C), thanks to strong southwest winds which blew mild air in off the Atlantic. (Image from BBC)

This was the scene from my house this afternoon, looking south over the frosted fields of Lennox Forest. High today topped a cold 29 degrees (-1.7C).

Despite Scotland and the north of England still chilling out with highs that struggled to reach freezing for a second consecutive day today and after an overnight once again under the same chilly, icy regime of clear skies and light winds which like most nights since November 25th have seen a severe penetrative frost form as radiative cooling sends temps dipping to between -4 and -8C widely. Eskdalemuir this morning dropped to 14 degrees (-10C) whilst my house fell to 16 degrees (-7.8C) and that’s with no snow on the ground!. However in saying all this, a line spanning west to east from Manchester on southwards, temps were closer to freezing or above and skies were clouding, even rainy as Atlantic air ruled Britain central and southern airspace, though embedded, lowlying residual cool air remained and we did see snow over the Cotswalds and down over the moors of the southwest yesterday and overnight. The mild rush of Atlantic air which soared overnight readings to beyond 10C along the coast and with a rain soaking 30+ mph wind out of a typically balmy southwest direction, this is a sure sign of a change that WILL nudge northwards but albeit for us here in Scotland after a day of severe frost wasn’t hasn’t gone anywhere, the recover in temps may be slow for most, BUT IT IS COMING. Tomorrow will likely be another cold day with highs struggling to reach freezing for most inland areas of Scotland and snow is likely as a precipitation shield pushes up from the south. As this band of moisture hits the colder air firmly established over the Southern Uplands, snow will break out and heavy, particularly over eastern areas from say eastern South Lanarkshire east into the Lothians and Borders with the highest ground picking upwards of 2-4 inches of fresh snow, lighter amounts further west towards Glasgow. Even down across Dumfries and Galloway, 1-2 inches is possible with a covering in Dumfries. Glasgow at best may collect a coating to half an inch with 1 inch possible over Fenwick moor in North Ayrshire.

However, come Monday and those winds blowing over southern Britain should start to enter the southern Uplands and over the Central Belt, allowing temperatures the boost 7-8C and remain mild by night with wind and rain more than likely!

Later into next week and I believe we may be positively balmy with upper 40s (7-9C) over the Central Belt between Glasgow and Edinburgh with nights holding in the “mild 40s” (4-6C). Haven’t seen a night stay above 40 in quite sometime now here at my house! Areas over England and Wales may see highs top 13 or 14C and nights which hold near 10C!

BOTH CHICAGO AND MINNEAPOLIS SET TO ENDURE PERHAPS 1-2 DAYS BELOW ZERO F (-18C).

Yes, you thought it was cold here right? Well, for us, who live in a mild, maritime climate, sure, it has been, however we tend to forget that there are MANY places, even cities, much bigger and busier than say Glasgow or Edinburgh which see COLDER DAYTIME HIGHS than our coldest low’s this winter. Both Minneapolis and Chicago can get real chilly in winter, however they are more comparable to Moscow or St Petersburg in Russia, why, their in the heart of a large landmass, well away from modifying, warming influences of seas and oceans. Also, their landmasses reach pretty much up into the Arctic and therefore those Arctic winds, when they howl, have no nice, mild waters to take the true sting off the cold!

As the Arctic wolf gets set to roar down the Central Plains of the USA, the upper-level steering winds are helping bundle super cold air which is over northern Canada and with that fresh injection of Siberian air, all this will come crashing down the unabstructed Plains and will force Minneapolis and Chicago to bundle up as it appears within the next 10-day period, highs may fail to reach zero in both cities and nights may drop towards -20 in Minneapolis, -10 in Chicago and given the fact that with these air masses and of course geography playing a major role, it’s always windy. With these readings, even the slightest breathe of wind is enough to create a high risk of frost bite on exposed skin. However, these are busy, vibrant cities which just so happen to be located in the interior of a continent and in a geographic setting in which there is literally no mountains to stop brutal; Arctic air from flowing straight through them. In fact the Rockies to the west and Appalachains to the east, help funnel Arctic air southwards with ease and it’s really not unusual to see highs struggle to reach zero in Minneapolis or perhaps 10 in Chicago. Each and every year, these cities have to endure severe cold and particularly windchill. Minneapolis on any given winter will most likely fall to between -10 and -15F with perhaps 1 in 5 falling below -20. And most winter’s see one or two days struggle to reach 2 or 3 degrees and quite often zero with daytime wind chills of between 25 and 35 below zero. Chicago will often endure several nights below zero. Winds whistling out of the northwest and through those buildings help drop wind chills below -20 pretty much every winter!

Of course, further north and it’s often MUCH colder away from the urban heat island. International Falls on the US-Canada border will regularly fall towards -15 to -25 degrees with most winter’s seeing a few nights under 30 below. Windchills are common to reach between 40 and 50 below!
