WEATHER TALK

EUROPE THAWING OUT, WHILST NORTH AMERICA COOLING DOWN, EXTREME COLD NEXT WEEK!

Even though we here in Scotland are once again contending with close to freezing daytime highs and -5 to -8C nights as well as gusty winds, heavy windblown snow over the Highlands, further to the south and it’s fairly mild over the southern reaches of England and the same can be said for a large chunk of southern-continental Europe as a strong Atlantic flow of air is flowing down and around the base of the trough that is parked over us. The trough isn’t all that far south of here, nor particularly large, thus explaining why even southern Britain isn’t cold.

Look at the upper-level map for today (below), notice the brighter colours, from a line stretching from Manchester eastwards, across the North Sea and this line carries it’s way all the way across towards Warsaw, Poland, this line, southwards is experiencing wind, rain and plenty of clouds, ALL of Atlantic origin! East of Warsaw and cooler air can be found. Explaining why Berlin is 36F (3C) whilst Moscow is currently 16F (-9C), Incidentally, whilst Berlin is only falling to 32F (0C), Moscow is falling to 10F (-12C), not that bad for Moscow at this time of year!. To the north of the boundary/seperation between mild Atlantic air and colder/Arctic air, snows and cold remain over the “typically cold favoured areas such as Norway, Sweden and Finland eastwards into european Russia. From Glasgow to Edinburgh on northwards the air is cold with lows expected to fall to around 14F (-10C) at Aviemore and 9F (-12C) at Braemar, both in the Highlands. Indeed as you’d expect, underneath the coolpool, cities such as Oslo, Stockholm and up into NW Russia will fall below 10F (-12C) and colder when skies are clear and winds light. We here in Scotland have a modified version of the air Iceland as well as Scandinavia is feeling, simply due to our small island surrounded by modifying ocean and interior cities of Europe which don’t have this warming influence.

Note the darker blues over Iceland, or even the purples pushing south, just to the north of Iceland!

If you look at the map below which is for this coming Saturday, those darker blues are gone completely, even for Scandinavia as the entire trough weakens and milder Atlantic air gets a stronger push, covering a greater area of our continent, influencing more of Europe and even the cooler areas such as Norway, Sweden and Finland ease up on the chill with perhaps a push to slightly above normal temperaturewise, above the first time this has occured since November. Also notice the brighter yellows showing up over interior Europe. These are much milder temps flooding the continent and indeed, flood is a word that’s of concern over the next 5-10 days as this warm, Atlantic air will cause massive snowmelt and propell temperatures 5-15 degrees above normal over especially the heart of central Europe from sections of France, Germany and Poland, which are typically cold this time of year, remember, this is now the heart of winter, the coldest portion of the year!

BIGTIME WARMING FOR SCOTLAND LATER NEXT WEEK!

With the departure of the extreme cold from Europe over the next 5-10 days, it appears the cold is bundling now over Siberia (intensifying as our cold air gets shoved eastwards into Siberia and northwards, across the pole and into northwest Canada and Alaska) and indeed over far northwestern North America. This vast hemispheric shift of air flow in the upper-levels of the atmosphere displays both visibly with the way the patterns are altering as well as in future models, a vast pool of severe Arctic air is growing over Canada’s Yukon and Northwest Territories, aided by a cross-polar flow. In 4-6 days from now, all this intense cold will be transported south into the USA and it looks as though a savage 5-10 day stretch looms from central Canada all the way towards the US Gulf Coast! More details coming shortly (hopefully in WEATHER TALK tomorrow).

VAGARIES OF THE WEATHER
INDIA & SUB-CONTINENTAL ASIA WEATHER
BY RAJESH KAPADIA

This current cold wave in Northern/NW and Central India is unprecedented, and its intensity has, I must admit, taken me by surprise !

-1.3c at Bikaner airport on Thursday, 1c at Jaipur and Jaisalmer and a temperature range between 7c in the day and 4c in the night at Kanpur on thursday, 6th. Jan !

0.6c at Agra and 0c at Daringbadi, Orrisa !

-4c recorded at Mt. Abu on the 4th, and 3.7c at Delhi on that night.

And of-course, Leh was -23c with Kargil freezing at -18c a few days back, and people walking across the frozen Dal Lake in Srinagar, where it was -5c om wednesday, as the shikaras were stuck.

In Pakistan, Sindh, adjoining Rajasthan, was the hard hit region. Sibbi slipped to -0.5c and Karachi port city measured 8c.Northern pakistan Punjab region is fog hit, with days as cold as 9/10c. Islamabad froze at -1c on Thursday morning.

I think, this cold wave will slip out of sindh and central Pakistan by Friday, and move eastwards, and Rajasthan and NW India will have a day more to face the brunt.

By the weekend, things will ease out by 2/3c in the NW and Central and Northern Indian areas. The core cold wave region will have shifted out of this regions by saturday.High clouds (cirrus and alto-cirrus) will cover the NW areas of India and adjoining pakistan this weekend.

Gujarat and the Konkan coast may see temperatures dipping on the weekend by 2/3c due to strong Northerlies.

Mumbai, which is seeing expected rise in temperatures since the last 3 days, will get some relief this weekend.

A fall in temperatures by 2/3 c is on the cards this weekend, with refreshing Northerly winds.

Highs will drop from the present 32c to 29/30c and lows from the present 22c to 18/19c.
