AT 26 DEGREES AND FALLING HERE AT HOME, NOT ONLY IS THIS THE COLDEST OCTOBER NIGHT IN YEARS, IT MAY TAKE A RUN AT THE RECORD

When opening the door of my house around 11.30pm tonight, skies were as clear and as starlit as they could ever be, the moon full and shinning bright, and it was darn COLD!

Yes, I thought this morning’s 27-degree low (-2.2C) was cold enough for October but already the temperature has not only surpassed this number but it’s diving into unusual territory for still, so early in the season. This magnitude of cold would make December or even January proud never mind the early morning of October 25th!

By looking through Met Office reports, on the chilly October of 2008, a temperature of -4.5C or 24 degrees at Katesbridge (Co Down), -6.4C or 20 degrees at Altnaharra (Sutherland) and a very cold -6.6C at Topcliffe (North Yorkshire). Interestingly, even colder numbers were felt on October of 2003 with Shap in Cumbria falling to a downright cold -6.9C or 20 degrees. Colder still and possibly a UK cold record for the month of October was a -7C or 19 degrees at Altnaharra in Sutherland.

Tonight I believe conditions are ripe for temperatures even here in the Central Belt to fall towards -5C or 23 degrees and that is impressive considered it’s not only October, but there is no snow on the ground as well as daytime highs that are reaching relatively mild values of 8 to 12C.

As for the fells of Cumbria, North Yorkshire and of course the sheltered Glens of Highland Scotland, temperatures have a very good chance at falling to at least -6C and perhaps -7C (19F) tonight, is it possible we reach -8C and if so, do we see a new October record for the UK???

UPDATE: CURRENT TEMPS AS OF 1AM OCT 25TH: My house is now down to 25 degrees with a hard frost now firmly established. Shap, Cumbria and Tulloch Bridge IN the Highlands is now 24 degrees and these cold numbers continue to drop under perfect conditions for early-season radiational cooling!
