southern plains
The blowtorch continues from Texas up into Missouri with yesterday’s 107 in Little Rock, 102 in Dallas and 102 up in St Louis. The high that’s bringing these super hot days is nudging slightly north and this brought, like we’ll see today again, some showers and thunderstorms across Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, into the Houston area, these storms rortating around the hot dome. Today look for for highs in the 96-97 range for Houston to San Antonio, 100-degree air from the far north Houston suburbs all the way north to St Louis, even Springfield, Ill with temps in between this region, highs may approach 110. The major issue I have is that dew points are surging into the mid to upper 70s with some spots topping 80-degree humidities with an air temperature OVER 100. That’s deadly stuff and I urge you to take caution as heat indexes, like yesterday will easily top 115 and in some cases, particularly from Little Rock, Memphis up to St Louis and Springfield over 120! Lows tonight will fall to only 80 tonight!
southeast & florida
As the big ridge swings to the north over Arkansas and far western Tennessee, much of the Southeast will find themselves in a 30-40% chance of seeing a shower or storm today, like yesterday. Highs will get hot, humidity will be high and I am looking for Atlanta, GA to top 94, Low 77, Charlotte, NC 92, Low 76, Jacksonville, FL 92, Low 78, Montgomery, AL 98, Low 80, New Orleans, LA 95, Low 81… the further north and west you go from N.O. the more into the 100s you go. In fact Shreveport, LA to Memphis, including Little Rock may get within a couple of degrees from 110.. Heat inxes may touch 120 or higher! Lows in this corridor may struggle to get below 85 in spots!
southwest
A classic morning start along the coast this morning with cloud and fog with 50s! This will burn back through this morning, giving way to sunshine and 70s even at the beaches, High’s today, San Diego 75, LA and San Francisco. Inland coastal valleys should enjoy upper 80s to low 90s, including Riverside. As for the deserts, you should enjoy hot temps and abundant sun with highs pushing 110 in spots like Palm Springs and Baker, around 105-107 for Vegas and Phoenix. Lows tonight, 60 for beaches and downtowns, 60s for inland areas and 70s for the deserts.
northwest
You folks throughout the Northwest will enjoy a beautiful day with early coastal burnoff with near 70 at the beaches of WA and OR! Look for Seattle to top 82, Portland 88-90, beautiful 70s in the mtns and 80s to mid-90s east of the mtns. Montana will enjoy 80s and 90s whilst the Great Basin from Salt Lake to Denver will enjoy sun and 92-94 degree highs, though Denver may see a few storms. Lows tonight should cool to the pleasant 50s in most areas!
northeast & mid-atlantic
Across the region today storms will roll in from the west as a cold front moves through today. Look for highs to top 91-92 down in DC whilst Baltimore, Philly up to New York will get warm, humid and highs will top between 87-89 in most spots, but into the late afternoon look for storms to begin darkening western skies. Lows tonight will drop into the 60s across most areas, look for 70s in the downtowns of the cities.
northern plains
Strong to possibly severe thunderstorms possible across the Northern tier today as these storms blossom, southwest to northeast around the rime of the hot dome, this is a classic “ring of fire”. Whilst it’s over 100 down by St Louis, highs should touch around 80-90 across the board with lower readings across the Dakotas, highest between MSP and CHI where it may touch 90. STAY SAFE IF OU LIVE IN THIS REGION AS STORMS COULD TURN SEVERE RAPIDLY!

ST LOUIS, THE CROSSROADS OF EXTREMES!

Persistent air temperatures in the 95-102-degree range, tropical rainforest dew points in the upper 70s to even low 80s and heat index values of 110-120 has been and often is the norm in this heartland city by the mighty Mississippi during summer. I have tracked closely the conditions experienced this summer in St Louis and it’s been downright oppressive most of the summer in 2010. In stark contrast, often during winter, this can be a city which often experiences some of the nations worst ice-storm conditions, howling sub-zero winds, ground blizzards and temps that bocome bone-chilling mighty quick and you’d struggle to get an interior continental city more so than St Louis, a city exposed or right at the crossroads of every time of weather as it sits open to tropical and dangerously high humidity, desert-like heat and like those living in this city have experienced a lot this summer and fairly often during perhaps every 2nd or 3rd summer where the combination of the two bring incredibly dangerous heat indexes. Nights that regularly stuffle to get below 80 degrees. If it’s not blowtorch heat combined with super moist air, it’s supercell thunderstorms that regularly train over the area, severe flooding can also be a regular issue.. It’s far enough south to tap the 100s easier than say Minneapolis, it’s not like Chicago which is modified by Lake Michigan and it’s far enough north to experience the wicked combo of super cold, ice-storms and everything else…

Right now it’s 101 degrees and feeling close to 110 after a morning low today of 82 degrees!

Vagaries of the Weather
India & Sub-Continental Asia Weather

Ok,so Mumbai is getting the required “breather”. With 22 mms of rain in Mumbai on Tuesday (vagaries estimated 20 mms), and just less than 10 mms on Wednesday, I anticipate the situation to remain “status Quo” till Saturday.

I had kept the forecast “on hold” in my last blog till Thursday, now why extend till Saturday?

A slight shift in the situation. The low has formed in the bay, and NRL has numbered it 90B, at 19.4N and 86.1E.But, many models doubt its intensification capacity. Infact, only IMD confirms its status growing to “well marked low”. Ok, might just deepen to 996 mb from current 1000mb.

But, even if it does go beyond 996 mb, it may take a day or two longer than its normal estimated speed rate.. Might just linger off the coast till Saturday.

Like the previous instance, Kerala and North Karnataka coasts will get winds, bringing in rains till Friday/Saturday, a result of the rush towards the low prior to its inland movement.

Subdued rains this week all over central and northern India. Bihar, Jharkhand and Southern W.Bengal may see an increase in rainfall Friday/Saturday, as the low intensifies.

Thursday thru Saturday for Mumbai: Showers of passing nature, not persistent, with sunny intervals. Day temperature, hitherto around 28c, will creep up to 30/31c. Around 10-15 mms/day.No hindrances !

With 2 months to go, touching the 2500 mms mark (100″) should not be difficult for Mumbai Colaba.Like mentioned earlier, the all time record for Colaba stands at

Lakes supplying water to Mumbai, have received good rains on Monday and Tuesday. In these 2 days, Modak Sagar 165 mms, Upper Vaitarna has got 170 mms, Bhatsa 112 mms, Tulsi 105 mms, mms, Tansa 123 mms and Vihar 63 mms.

This has increased the storage stock . The stock as on 3rd August, year wise is:

2005: 11.36 lmlitres.

2006: 12.24 lmlitres

2007: 7.20 lmlitres

2008: 6.80 lmlitres

2009: 7.20 lmlitres

2010: 9.00 lmlitres.
