your america today forecast
by mark vogan

southwest
A very hot day in store from the southern plains to the desert southwest with a strong four corners high firmly in control over the region and likely will produce a tie for the hottest of 2010 in Las Vegas with a forecast high of 110 perhaps even topping that number! Here are today’s highs and lows I am calling for today:
Phoenix, AZ 113/90
Baker, CA 114/75
Needles, CA 115/85
Barstow, CA 107/75
Twentynine Palms, CA 109/76
Palm Springs, CA 114/78
Lancaster, CA 100/72
Riverside, CA 100/68
Bare in mind the elevation difference between low desert (Colorado Desert) which ranges from slightly below sea level to 800ft above sea level will see highs generally between 110-118 depending on elevation, location within a valley or basin and local wind. As for the high desert of the Mojave, elevation generally over 1,000ft, will see highs ranges from near 107-110 at lowest levels (around 1,000ft) to near 100 degrees (above 4,000ft)

I am predicting 282ft below sea level,  Death Valley to top off at around 123-124 degrees this afternoon and may record it’s hottest day of 2010 today!

northwest
The Upper ridge providing all the intense heat across the southern plains and desert southwest, will expand northwards today and bring warm to even hot temps to the PNW with highs bumping up to 80 at Seattle by this afternoon, 85 for Portland. East of the Cascades it will be equally as sunny as west of the mtns and we should see highs range from 80-90 across the board, 60s for the mountain communities. It should be a breezy but warm day for Montana with highs ranging from 74 at Cut Bank to around 80 at Billings. Lows tonight range generally from 40s in the mountains to 50s at low elevations.
southeast & florida
The Southeast with the exceptions of Florida should enjoy a mostly sunny to completely sunny day with hot temps pushing the low to even mid-90s. The lowest highs of around 90-92 will be found to the east from Charlotte to Atlanta and becoming slightly hotter to further southwest you head. Highs may be a warm as 95 in Memphis, 94 at Jackson and 93 down in New Orleans. Dew points of upper 60s to the north and low to mid-70s further south are of seasonal values today! Lows tonight range from near 80 at the Gulf Coast to around 74-76 at points inland.
northeast & mid-atlantic
The thunderstorm and heavy downpour threat lingers again today throughout the Northeast with the lingering influence of the front. Highs should be trimmed back to a more pleasant 78 up in Boston with shower likely, 87 in New York (showers likely), Philadelphia 90 (showers likely) and DC 93 with showers likely! High dew points unfortunately will continue to make for a steamy feeling air across the region, making those slightly cooler temps, not feel quite as pleasant and will be responsible in holding lows in the 70s once again tonight.
northern plains
Today will be a warm, windy day for the Dakotas with highs in the mid-80s, whilst thunderstorms threaten to the east over Minnesota and Wisconsin. As for points south and east, no storm threat, more sun, less wind and a hot day is in store for the Windy City with a high of 91, down to Cincinnati around 88 and further down to St Louis where a hot 97 is forecast. Expect a 94 at Kansas City. Lows tonight range from 50s across the north, low to mid-70s for Minneapolis down to Chicago and 75 for Kansas City across to St Louis. Cincinnati should cool to near 70.
southern plains
A hot day, dominated by strong July sunshine and highs that range from 95 from Houston to San Antonio and 98 around the Big-D to a lower 93 at Lubbock. It should be slightly cooler down along the lower Texas coast with Brownsville topping around 92 and the beaches of South Padre Island seeing near 88-90 with dew points in the mid-70s. The Upper Texas coast will have similar dew point air and temps slightly over 90 at Galveston. Lows range from a typical, near 80 along the shore to mid and upper 70s inland.

THE CONTINENTEL EFFECT PART 2

Since showing you the large variation between January’s coldest and so far, July’s warmest across as selection of European cities, here are the large departures from normal that swing from one extreme to the other. This is what I find most facinating when comparing what has become a fairly extreme year so far when it comes to record cold at the commencement of the year and now extreme on the hot end of the scale..

CITY/COUNTRY             DEPARTURE FROM NORMAL

                                                                  JANUARY             JULY

DE BILT, NEATHERLANDS                        -5.3                    +5
ROTTERDAM, NETHERLANDS                -5.9                    +8.3
GRONIGEN, NETHERLANDS                      -6.6

REIMS, FRANCE                                            -4.9                    +8
PARIS, FRANCE                                             -5                      +8.3
STRASBOURG, FRANCE                              -4                      +10

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM                                   -4.1                   +8.8

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN                             -10.7                   +7.4
OSTERSUND, SWEDEN                               -8.4                     +5

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK                        -5.4                     +6.5

BERLIN, GERMANY                                      -7.8                    +10.4

FIGURES COURTESY OF ACCUWEATHER PRO

The figures above for July 2010 are of course up to July 13 and it’s likely it will remain hotter than normal across much of central and southwestern Europe as the large, sprawlling high continues to bake the heart of Europe, exactly where it froze during one of the toughest winter’s on record.

CANARY’S SUFFERING 90s AS SAHARAN HEAT DISRUPTS THE ISLANDS NATURAL AC

Rather than the prevailing wind blowing off the Atlantic, from the west, it’s prevailing wind is coming from the east at the mid to upper levels and at the surface throughout these typically hot but modified islands, I heard a report from someone today who just returned home from Lanzarote who said there was not a breathe of wind and was “too hot”, yes that’s what winds blowing off the oven-like Sahara does, even to a relatively small island chain, some 100 miles out in the Atlantic. Low to even mid-90s have been recorded across the Canary’s and this is thanks to 113-120 degree air that’s blasting off the desert of Morrocco and Algeria and pushing westwards towards the islands. Modified, thankfully, due to it’s crossing of the cool East Atlantic waters as well as the cold Canary current. Still, mid-90s is no-picnic!

TODAY’S COND
A very windy and wet overnight with some torrential downpours throughout the day today, particularly late afternoon and into this evening. Strong winds, heavy downpours and even embedded thunder and lightening created a miserible end to the day. All this energy associated with a deep trough and strong low swinging west to east across Scotland…. Highs only topped 59!

Thanks for reading.
