In response to a strong approaching cold front and daytime heating, one or more lines of thunderstorms are developing from Indiana and Illinois, southwestward to eastern Texas this afternoon.
While most storms in this zone will produce damaging wind gusts, hail and blinding downpours, there is a elevated risk of storms producing a few tornadoes from southeastern Missouri and Kentucky northward to northern Indiana.

*Cold Slap Follows Warmth Chicago to NYC

The same system bringing damaging thunderstorms to the middle of the nation at midweek will mark an abrupt end to the unusual warmth in the East by Friday.
After seven days of temperatures averaging as much as 35 degrees above normal, temperatures will take a plunge back to seasonable levels Thursday west of the Appalachians and Friday along the Atlantic Seaboard.
Just a piece of the weather pattern that brought cold and snow to the Rockies over the past week will shift eastward.
