>FROZEN NORTHERN HEMISPHERE: BENEATH SNOW AND BELOW NORMAL

According to AccuWeather.com Professional… Glasgow, Scotland is 5.7 degrees below normal making this the second coldest December since 1990. The coldest being the frigid December of 1995 which produced a tie to the UK’s all-time coldest reading of -27C or -17 degrees Fahrenheit which was recorded at Altnaharra in Surtherland, Scotland and a -20C low in Glasgow was recorded, which is the coldest on record for the site.

It’s currently well below normal across the UK for the first 26 days of December 2009….

In northeast England, Topcliffe, Yorkshire one night under clear skies and nearly a foot of fresh snow on the ground plummeted to 7 degrees (-14C) which is the coldest in England in many years, likely since 2001 but perhaps even longer. For Scotland the coldest night goes to Tulloch Bridge near Fort William deep within a Highland Glen where the overnight low bottomed out at 4 degrees (-16C). The coldest high goes to Kinbrace, another Highland location where the high warmed to a mere 14 degrees (-9.8C).

What’s very interesting is that most locations across the Northern Hemisphere was experiencing above normal temperatures the first 5 to 10 days of the month before the negative Arctic Oscillation and North Atlantic Oscillation turned things around.
