Chicago’s Kennedy Expressway this morning before the arrival of Arctic air tonight..

THIS MORNINGS IMPRESSIVE NUMBERS: FAIRFIELD, UTAH -34, DENVER INT AIRPORT, COLO -17, OLYMPIA, WASH 6, SEATTLE, WASH 18

A Meteorological Marvel: Intense Arctic High and warm, moist tropical air come to meet to create an explosive cyclone of fury that’s unleashing heavy snow, 60 mph winds, 40 below wind chills, torrential rains, lightning, unusual warmth, tornadoes…… do i need to say more?
I am in awe of what has become one of the worst winter stoym systems in 10 to as much as 20 years across the Midwest as a foot or more of snow gets blown by upwards of 60 mph subzero winds. Places across the Western Plateau that endured the storm yesterday and the day previous woke up to clear skies, breezy or windy conditions and a frigid air mass that has been tranported in behind this powerhouse, menacing the Great Lakes now and virtually shutting down Iowa.
STORM CREATES A SHARP CUT OFFWarmth is excellerated ahead of front, Rain started off the day in Chicago and 33 degrees, Memphis 40 degrees and Brownville a tropical 66 whilst Amarillo hit 6 degrees (currently . Brownsville stopped at 66. Minneapolis hit 10 degrees but where winds where lighter and skies clear, it was -17 in Denver. Reno, NV hit -4, Ely, NV dropped off at -20..
Out West: This morning has been a remarkably cold morning under brilliant clear skies, a strong Arctic High over top a widespread fresh snow cover.
THE MIDWEST A FIGHTZONE: The Midwest is seperated by two very different air masses, both of which are getting wrap into one another by a storm center that produced Chicago’s lowest pressure in 20 years! As the very intense cold Arctic air gets drawn east into the low which is now spinning over the upper Great Lakes, warm, sub-tropical air is getting focres way into Michigan and actually wrapping around the north of the storm’s circulation, this mix has created tremendous upward motion, that upward moving air at the storm’s center has increased the excelleration of surrounding air inwards to the core to replace the rising air. Therefore an intense period of rain then snow is creating thunder sleet and snow as well as winds that are rattling at over 50 mph. East of the boundary 50 to 60-degree air is stirring now lines of thunderstorm cells that are also releasing gusts bteween 60-70 mph, possibly higher. As this system progresses through the rest of today overnight, places that experienced a cold rain and wind blown day are likely to experience rapid falls in temperature, wind chills below zero and all that water on the ground will freeze fast. Highs that were in the low to mid-30s today may struggle to see mid-teens tomorrow and a low gets to single digits by morning. Places such as Wisconsin and Iowa which have all but grinded to a halt with relentless winddriven snow and building drifts will likely see skies clear out, drifting and blowing to continue and wind chills to fall into the 20 to 40 below zero territory tonight, making for frost bite a serious concern.

9PM RAPID FREEZE WARNING: After heavy rains fell overnight of up to near 1″ across the Chicagoland area, temperatures are only now getting towards freezing point and with a lot of surface water, as the wall of Arctic air promises to move into their area tonight, all that water on roadways and in other areas will rapidly free after dark and this could spell major travel problems for evening commuters and morning commuters as I expect temps to drop towards the mid-single digits would you believe and wind chills likely will fall into the -10s… This will be the case for many other areas including Indiana, Ohio, Lower Michigan where temps have been in the 40s and 50s today and with a strong line of thunderstorms and surga eof warm that was pulled north ahead of the cold front major rains have accompanied the warmer surge of air. Temps are likely to fall through the 20s tonight across Indiana, Iowa and lower Michigan, so please take extreme care of roadways as they are very likely to become dangerously slick.

**SIDE NOTE JUST FOR the GOOD FOLKS OF EUROPE (a little mention to what I’m thinking as well as North American storms..)

Europe getting colder over the continent as expected the cold will migrate westward as the shift into the North Atlantic Oscillation is key to driving the cold to here in Great Britain… It’s not so much the Arctic Oscillation as that is merely the key to allowing cold south and away from the pole… NAO expected to shift and cold is coming to Britain… Watch out around the 15-25th December as we are likely to be in the midst of true winter cold and possibly snow covering much of the country as well as the vast majority of the European landmass.

We are seeing high pressure move over us in the next 24 hours and mild, sunny days and crisp frosty nights is not what I am talking about… The cold of winter is expected to get here in about a week to 10-days from now! More on this coming up.

Thanks for reading.
